News article: Obese children more likely to have allergies

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 by Andy Pollen
An interesting article from Reuters that you may or may not find surprising. The first two paragraphs are below and you can click here for the full text.

Obese children and adolescents are 26 percent more likely to have some kind of allergy, especially to food, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

They said it is not clear from the study if obesity causes allergies, but it suggests controlling obesity in young people may be important for lowering rates of childhood allergies and asthma.

Are you struggling with weight loss and health problems associated with obesity? Then please join us at a FREE informational seminar where Indianapolis Bariatric Surgeons will discuss treatment methods and costs related to bariatric surgery. Questions to Ask Yourself

Monday, May 11, 2009 by Traci Baker
I was reading an article from January 2009 this year written by Dr. Phil and wanted to share these questions with you. Think about where you are at in your life. Are you considering weight loss surgery?  Perhaps you are currently in the pre-op stages. Maybe you are a newly post-op or a three year post-op patient.  Possibly you are just browsing due to interest!

Take a minute to read the question and answer honestly.

1.    Is what you’re doing in your life working?  Check every area of your life, and when you find one that isn’t working, tell yourself, This may have been my habit, but now’s the time to change it.

2.    Are your payoffs healthy? Sitting on the sidelines or putting up with less than you deserve is not a healthy pay off.

3.    Are you getting in the way of your own success? Ask yourself whether your decisions are carrying you toward what you want.  If you don’t know what that is sit down and make a list of what you truly want.

4.    Are you making everyone happy EXCEPT yourself? You need to look at why you are unwilling to stand up for who you are, what you want and start working to change.

5.    Is the cost of what you’re doing too high? No matter the circumstance, you’ve got to weigh the price you’re paying and decide whether it’s worth it.

From Morbid Obesity to Runner

Tuesday, April 28, 2009 by Sara Donlan
One of Clarian Bariatrics' success stories is about a lovely lady who entered her first 5K run recently.  She was in the office the other day and we could feel her exuberance.  She sent this detail in an email:

“I ran about ½ mile total of the 3.1 miles and I ran on every street we were on. I am very proud of myself to have even entered, let alone finish.  To think that just one year ago I weighed almost 400 lbs and smoked 1-2 packs of cigarettes a day!  We are all truly blessed.”

This is a TYPICAL scenario for many people who have undergone weight loss surgery.  They regain their lives…and then some!  This woman would never have dreamed of accomplishing what she did the other day.  I invite you to share your stories or dreams of a healthier, better life.

Are you ready to do something you never thought possible? Then join us at a FREE informational session to learn about bariatric surgery costs, problems caused by obesity and how weight loss surgery can save your life. Click on the image at the top right of this page to see upcoming dates!

Did you know?

Friday, April 24, 2009 by Samer Mattar

Obese patients are about six times more likely to develop heart disease than those of normal weight. Increased levels of blood fats and the metabolic effects of obesity affect coronary disease.

An increased load on the heart leads to early development of congestive heart failure. Severely obese people are 40 times more likely to suffer sudden death, in many cases due to cardiac rhythm disturbances.

However, weight loss surgery can help elminate - or drastically improve - this health problem caused by obesity. If you would like to learn more then consider joining us at a FREE informational seminar.

At the seminar you can ask questions of Indiana Weight Loss Surgeons and find out more information about bariatric surgery costs and Indiana Bariatric Centers. Click on the image at the top right of this page to learn about upcoming dates.

Gardening Can Be Fun and Educational

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 by Trish Seidel

I ran across a recent New York Times article about our new president and his family tending a garden patch on the South Lawn of the White House.  Apparently there hasn’t been a garden at the White House since World War II.  The garden will include vegetables, berries, and herbs, but no Obesity prevention, Weight Loss Surgery, Gardeningbeets since the president doesn’t like them.

Mrs. Obama states that the garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and for formal dinners, but its most important role will be to “educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at a time when obesity and diabetes have become a national concern."

The total cost for the White House garden (1,100 square foot plot) is $200.  To me, that’s money well spent. To read the entire article, just click here. Now try making one for you and your family!

News article: Cut calories by taxing soda

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 by Andy Pollen
I'll admit it, I love soda pop. I don't smoke, I exercise regularly and I try to adhere to as many RDA recommendations as possible, but soda pop remains a vice of mine. I thought that this was an interesting article, and I think that if a tax did occur, it would probably curb my consumption. The first few paragraphs are below:

Obesity rates - and medical costs - are skyrocketing while tax revenues are plummeting. What better time, asks Kelly D. Brownell, to levy a penny-per-ounce charge on sugared drinks?

Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale, first suggested driving down consumption with such a tax - much as tobacco taxes have helped reduce cigarette smoking - in 1994. He says he "got blistered."

The American Beverage Association maintained that sugary soft drinks have little or no effect on obesity (Brownell cites studies showing otherwise), that the tax would fall most heavily on poor people (Brownell says the poor are most harmed by sugared drinks), and that polls show Americans don't support a new "soda tax" (Brownell says polls also show that they do, if the revenue would improve public health).

Read full text of the article here. What do you think? Could this make a dent in America's obesity epidemic or is it just wishful thinking?

What does bariatric surgery cost?

Friday, April 10, 2009 by Lisa Buckalew
I am often asked by prospective patients the price of Bariatric surgery.  I try to give a ball park figure, but it is a price that I cannot quote exactly.  Prior to surgery we verify the benefits available to each patient with their insurance plan.  If insurance is not an option, I offer the patient the cash pay rate.  This is not one fee for all; you will receive a balance of approximately $26,000

A portion of this will be due before surgery (two weeks) the remaining balance will be in different bills.  Pre-operative testing, anesthesia, surgeon fees, etc…I cannot give an exact figure as each patient has different mitigating factors affecting their procedures.  Different co-morbidities require different tests for example.

If you have any additional questions about bariatric surgery financing, gastric bypass costs and other fees related to weight loss surgyer, please do not hesitate to call us at 317-275-7010.

March Support Group Recap, Part I

Friday, April 3, 2009 by Alvin Furiya
As you can see from Traci's blog post below, the Clarian Bariatric Support group meeting topic for March “Your Environment – The Toxic World Around Us.”

A recent report from Good Morning America said, “The average American is exposed to over 3,000 commercial messages each day.” It was agreed that this number could be more or less depending on where you live and that most of the advertising messages are for food, and beverages. We counted 10 logos or symbols for various products or companies in less than 10 seconds.

Marketing in the U.S. is a multi-billion dollar industry. Product placement in movies and grocery stores, billboards, internet ads, and 30 second Super Bowl ads that cost millions, demonstrates the effectiveness of marketing.

Each patient was challenged to count the number of times they were exposed to some type of food related marketing in the next 24 hours. This included restaurants you drive by, billboards, television commercials, product placement in your favorite movie or TV show, food discussion at work or at home, and anything that advertises food.

IN        OUT        AVOID

One key long term goal is to control the environment around you. The reality is dining out, the Food Network, food commercials, holiday’s, family events, etc. are here to stay. You must determine if these events are going to be IN your environment, OUT of your environment, or something you must AVOID.

Better Than Wheel of Fortune

Thursday, March 26, 2009 by Lisa Buckalew
Oh, I am guilty too!  The idea of one more thing on my calendar honestly makes my heart beat a little faster.  A full time career, completing my bachelor’s degree, a marriage (I do occasionally like to see my husband), a home, two teenagers who are involved in more than one activity every season.  We range from youth group to golf to young playwright workshops to football to drivers training. Whew!  I don’t know about you but it wears me out just to read the list.

Now, what about exercise? We all know we must keep that as a priority daily to stay healthy.  I am the perfect example of the hectic schedule and I must allow myself time daily to work on me.  I try to add activity in at any opportunity.  I take the stairs instead of the elevator, I do lunges around the kitchen while my popcorn is popping, I take the long route to the restroom at work.  Adding extra steps in as a starting point.

If you are intimidated by joining an organized exercise, yoga or dance class get a partner and workout at home.  There are some great DVD’s available for less than $10.  Start in your very own living room or garage.  Even if you can only work out for 20 minutes a day, think how far you could come in a month, two or six.

I honestly, cannot stand to walk on a treadmill; it is my ultimate last resort, but 20 minutes on that while listening to an iPod of my favorite tunes is better than sitting on my tush watching Wheel of Fortune. I am spinning my very own wheel by trying to incorporate everything I have learned at Clarian Bariatrics.  Give us a call to learn more about weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery costs and bariatric weight loss and start spinning your wheel of fortune.

News article: Obesity can trim 10 years off life

Thursday, March 19, 2009 by Andy Pollen
What could you do with an extra 10 years? Watch your grandkids graduate from college? Take that dream vacation? Walk a child down the aisle? It is amazing to think of the major life moments that could be missed just from being obese.

This artice, from USA Today, illustrates just the impact morbid obesity has on individuals. Below are the first couple paragraphs:

Weighing too much may take as much as a decade off your life, according a new analysis of studies that involved 900,000 people. Adults who are obese — about 40 or more pounds over a healthy weight — may be cutting about three years off their lives, mostly from heart disease and stroke.

Those who are extremely obese, about 100 or more pounds over a healthy weight, could be shortening their lives by as many as 10 years, the study found. Being extremely obese is similar to the effect of lifelong smoking, says Richard Peto, one of the lead researchers and a professor of medical statistics at Oxford University in England.

OAC Offers Free Guide for those Seeking Weight-Loss Surgery

Tuesday, March 17, 2009 by Andy Pollen
I was reading the March newsletter from the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) and found this great - FREE - resource for patients. It is described below:

Seeking approval for weight-loss surgery can be a difficult process. Often times, patients are denied by their insurance company on the first try and subsequent appeals and efforts can be frustrating and time consuming. To help patients through this process, the OAC developed the Working with Your Insurance Provider: A Guide to Seeking Weight-Loss Surgery guide.

The guide is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge needed to successfully work with their insurance provider and become an advocate for change. It offers readers information discussing the effects of obesity and morbid obesity, tips for working with your insurance provider, detailed information concerning the treatment options available for morbid obesity and much more.

To view and order this guide free-of-charge, please click here. If you have additional questions, feel free to call us at Clarian Bariatrics at 317-275-7010 or to join us at a FREE informational seminar where you can ask any question you have about bariatric surgery costs, the insurance approval process, Indianapolis bariatric weight loss and what leads to effective weight loss surgery outcomes.

Exercise - It is for everyone

Friday, March 13, 2009 by Lorie Blythe
Exercise did not used to be a part of my vocabulary.  I used to be one of “those people” who could eat whatever I wanted and never gain a pound and I never exercised.

Everyone wants to be that way.  Well, it was nice while it lasted, but it caught up with me.  I found myself weighing about 25 pounds more than I wanted and I saw more weight coming along.

In April 2007, I decided to join a gym and get a personal trainer.  I used to think that only the rich and famous could afford a personal trainer, but that is not the case at all.  I have one now and it is the best money I have ever spent on myself.  I encourage everyone to try it out sometime.
