That Darn Liver Reduction Diet!

Monday, March 23, 2009 by Annessa Chumbley
Okay, so we all know that the “Liver Reduction Diet” can send someone to the edge and back (by the way, it is something we made up; you cannot Google it and find anything!).

It takes a lot of hard work, motivation, and great commitment. But do it, stick to it, and there is nothing that you cannot do! I’ve witnessed patients not only “shrinking their liver,” but losing 30, 40, or 50 pounds prior to surgery.

I’ve witnessed people decreasing their insulin, going off blood pressure
medication...all prior to surgery! My patients have always impressed me. Even those that give up soda pop, french fries, or pasta have conquered great mountains in their lives.

One of the hardest things I hear about the “LRD” is that people need a greater variety of choices. What else is there to eat besides grilled chicken and steamed broccoli??

Trust me, there is beautiful food out there just waiting for you! Stick with the Clarian Bariatrics blog, and I’m going to provide you with some recipes that your liver and your surgeon will love.

Let’s start with a good Egg Salad, and come back for more next week!

EGGCELLENT Egg Salad
Liver Reduction Diet Recipes, Bariatric Weight Loss, Indianapolis Weight Loss Clinics, Bariatric Surgery Costs
4 hardboiled eggs, plus 4 hardboiled egg whites
¼ cup light or fat-free mayonnaise
1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill
fresh ground black pepper and salt, to taste
handful fresh spinach leaves (optional)

Directions:
1. To hard boil eggs the easy way: carefully add eggs to a medium-sized saucepan and cover with
water. Over medium-high heat, bring eggs to a boil. Turn off the heat, cover, and let set for 15
minutes.
2. Under cold running water, remove each shell from the eggs and place the 4 eggs and 4 egg
whites into a bowl. Using two knives, chop up eggs into bite-sized pieces. Add rest of ingredients
and mix thoroughly. Refrigerate until ready to eat.
To serve, enjoy a scoop over some fresh spinach leaves! Delish and super-nutritious!

I've been on the LRD for just over 2 weeks. Out of lack of variety( which triggers lack of motivation) I've used some of the Atkins receipes to fit the LRD. Keeping in mind the goal, this is definately tolerable! I lost 16lbs in just under 2 weeks.

Awesome job, Glenise! 16 lbs is incredible! Isn't it satisfying putting your mind to something and doing it whole-heartedly? Even if you hadn't lost that much weight, you're still taking control of your body and your relationship with food, and that's hard work. I'll be regularly updating this blog with more recieps so check back soon and often! Have a cheery day and keep it up!

I was just introduced to this web page today and I'm about 2 weeks into my LRD. The blog is a bit hard to navigate straight to the recipe ideas. Is there anyway to tag them for quick reference?
Friday, April 10, 2009 by Andy Pollen:
Kristin, thank you for the feedback about the blog. The easiest way to jump right to the recipes is the type "recipe" in the "Search This Blog" option on the right hand side of the page. This will show you a listing of all the recipes that have been posted on the blog. Best of luck on your weight loss journey!

I'm in desparate need of being able to get started. I have no idea what to even start eating. What's a good menu look like for the day? I have to lose 25 pounds before I can have my surgery.

Hello Sherri! I completely understand how confusing and frustrating this can be, when you're totally doing "surgery" on your life:) Why don't I write you a more personal note to help? You'll want to base your menu for the day around meat + veggies, but I know it's hard to get creative and come up with variety when you're on the Liver Reduction Diet. Just also know that the RDs are here to help in anyway they can! Feel free to call them at anytime. The main line is: 317-275-6067. We know YOU CAN DO IT!

I have been on the LRD for one week. I have lost a little over 10 pounds and feel great about my accomplishment. However, I am a little concerned about some comments that have been made on a website that I am using to log diet and exercise. I was told that the loss was "mostly only water" and that the diet was not safe to follow for more than one week. It doesn't seem right to me that following this very strict diet would only result in water loss. Anyway, I cannot wait for my surgery on Sept. 15th. Dr. Stewart will perform it at Ball Memorial Hospital as they are partners with Clarian Health.

I just started my LRD and I need some suggestions for quick breakfast meals that can be ate on the go. I work about 70 miles from home and usually take my breakfast with me. In the past that has been a peanut butter sandwich, dry cereal, fruit or pastry. Seeing how none of these are on the menu and I can't eat eggs and ham on the road, I wondered if you had any suggestions.
