Quick Tips for Eating Out: Fast Food

Saturday, June 20, 2009 by Sarah Muntel
The best bets:  Salads (Wendy’s, McDonalds, Subway), plain hamburger, plain grilled chicken, baked potato with chili (Wendy’s), low carb wraps (Subway)

The worst:  chicken nuggets, fries, fried fish, milkshakes, “special sauce," mayonnaise, croissant breakfast sandwiches

Quick Tip:  Order a kid’s meal.  Choose a plain hamburger.  Substitute fresh fruit for fries.  Order a low fat milk and save it for later!

I try to eat at Hardees or Burger King IF I must eat fast food. They char grill their meat so it is not as greasy as grilled/fried meats. I will order them with mustard and sometimes ketchup so the burger is not so dry.

Take a look at the nutritional sheets at your fast food places. Surprisingly, a hamburger and a skim milk at McDonalds is fewer calories and fat than their fancy salads. The salads pack on fatty dressings. Just skip the Big Macs and Quarter Pounders! Avoid the ketchup and stick to mustard. Also, the fries are of course fatty. But, the small burgers can meet your post-bariatric needs at the fast food places. The best tip I got post-surgery was, "Don't let the tires of your car even touch the parking lot of a fast food place until you're at least 1-year post-op." That gave me time to break the fast food habit. Now I can take the family through a drive through and not get the big cravings myself!
