Types of Weight Loss Surgery: Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

Friday, October 23, 2009 by Terri Hohlt
This operation is the most common and successful malabsorptive surgery. First, a small stomach pouch is created to restrict food intake. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine), and the first portion of the jejunum (the second segment of the small intestine). This bypass reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. It is the primary surgery performed by The Clarian Bariatric Center.

This operation can be performed either by a traditional open surgery or laparoscopically, a relatively new technology using a small video camera and a few customized instruments to perform surgery with minimal tissue damage. The Roux-en-Y technique is generally more effective in reversing health problems associated with severe obesity. Patients who have malabsorptive operations generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within two years.

Clarian Bariatrics Adds Surgeons and Moves Location to Meet Demand

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Terri Hohlt
We sent out this information earlier in the week, and I wanted to share it with you. We are thrilled at all the changes coming to Clarian Bariatrics, and we realize it would not be possible without your continued support! You guys are the best!

Exciting changes are in store for Clarian Bariatrics this summer as the program announced the addition of two full-time surgeons and a move to a new 30,000 square foot outpatient clinic to better accommodate the rapidly growing program, which has experienced double digit growth the past three years.

Dr. Daniel T. McKenna will join the surgical team of Clarian Bariatrics, a designated Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), on August 10. Dr. McKenna joins the programs five other bariatric surgeons who completed nearly 400 surgeries at Clarian North Medical Center in 2008.

A Wisconsin native, McKenna comes to Clarian Bariatrics from Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where he completed his minimally invasive surgery fellowship. He is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and his Doctor of Medicine. McKenna was a categorical resident in general surgery at the University of Utah and the University of Wisconsin.

In April, Dr. Jack Ditslear joined the Clarian Bariatrics staff full-time after working on a part-time basis with the program since its launch in 2004. A Noblesville native, Dr. Ditslear graduated with honors in chemistry at Miami University of Ohio and then graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Dr. Ditslear carries a vast amount of experience in bariatric surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons, and is also accredited as a Bariatric Center of Excellence Surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation. Additionally, Dr. Ditslear is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is on the teaching staff for the Indiana University General Surgery Residence program.

“We are thrilled to have Drs. McKenna and Ditslear join the surgery staff at Clarian Bariatrics on a full-time basis,” Jonathan Goble, FACHE, President & CEO of Clarian North Medical Center, said. “The addition of these two skilled surgeons will aid in the successful implementation of many exciting programs.”

Among those initiatives is the launch of a non-surgical division for the weight loss program and an adolescent bariatric program. In addition, an exercise program championed by Erin Light, a certified personal trainer, will begin in August and provide patients an educational approach to personally-tailored exercise programs. Also, William Hilgendorf, PhD, Manager of Bariatric Behavioral Health, has implemented a behavioral program that will increase the coping skills of post-operative patients and improve patient outcomes.

These new patient support opportunities fit with the already established and popular weekly support groups and quarterly cooking classes. Programs like these have led Clarian Bariatrics to be nationally recognized as a robust program that enjoys some of the best weight loss outcomes in effectiveness and durability.

Due to the ongoing program growth, the Clarian Bariatrics outpatient clinic will move from its current location in building 11 of Intech Park to a 30,000 square foot space in building 10 of Intech Park, located on the northwest side of Indianapolis. This move will provide staff with more exam rooms, dedicated exercise rooms and additional meeting space for support groups and the non-surgical weight loss program.

“The growth our program has experienced over the past five years has been remarkable and humbling,” Samer Mattar, MD, FACS, Medical Director of Clarian Bariatrics, said. “Our staff, surgeons and patients have helped us create a unique program that is only beginning to reach its full potential.”

Are you supported?

Friday, July 24, 2009 by Lisa Buckalew
So you think you want to have Bariatric surgery?  So, you think you can do this alone?  I beg to differ.  You can read all the information posted on any Web site, soak up all the info from Oprah and TLC, but you have no idea what your contemplating until you speak to a patient first hand.  Every story is different every patient is different every situation is different.  The common denominator in all successful Bariatric patients, and in every Bariatric story and situation, is the support system.

If you have surgery in a weight loss surgery center that does not have an adequate support system in place, and you do not have an abundance of supporting people around you, do not stop looking.  The Indianapolis Clarian Bariatric Center is supportive on more than the level.  The search for a proper fit is so important; do not settle for just any old place to change the rest of your life.

Yes, we stand behind our beliefs, we believe what we say and we walk what we talk.  Those are very important items when considering weight loss surgery. No person can do this alone, the education aspect alone could be overpowering.  Whether your support system is family, friends or loved ones we are always here to lend a hand, loan an ear or offer a word of encouragement.

The people who work at Clarian Bariatrics believe in our passion.  We want all of you to succeed and the only way to do that is support!  Support does not mean, contribute to lifestyles that will harm a Bariatric patient, and often it is given to our patients in an honest straight forward manner, but it is given in love.  Support groups. walking groups, copings skills classes, cooking classes are all ways to build a stronger foundation for a successful outcome.  Come and visit us at our education seminars (we have one this week) and take the steps to changing the rest of your life.

News article: Obesity Reduces Women’s Brain Power

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 by Andy Pollen
Not a good week for women's health and obesity. The following article came across my Google alert.

Obesity may be linked to a reduced volume of gray matter in the brains of postmenopausal women, according to a new study published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine: Journal of Biobehavioral Medicine.

“A subset of women from the Pittsburgh Healthy Women Study (HWS) who had been followed for an average of 15 years was invited to participate in brain-imaging studies,” said lead author Isabella Soreca, MD, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. “We found that those who had gained the most weight had lower gray matter volume. Women who gain weight tend to have high blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance and other health concerns that are known to affect the brain.”

Are you considering weight loss surgery? Then join us at a FREE informational seminar where you can learn about the different types of bariatric surgery (including gastric bypass and Lap Band) and hear from Indiana weight loss doctors at Clarian Bariatrics, a well-respected Indianapolis bariatric center. Did you know?

Friday, April 24, 2009 by Samer Mattar

Obese patients are about six times more likely to develop heart disease than those of normal weight. Increased levels of blood fats and the metabolic effects of obesity affect coronary disease.

An increased load on the heart leads to early development of congestive heart failure. Severely obese people are 40 times more likely to suffer sudden death, in many cases due to cardiac rhythm disturbances.

However, weight loss surgery can help elminate - or drastically improve - this health problem caused by obesity. If you would like to learn more then consider joining us at a FREE informational seminar.

At the seminar you can ask questions of Indiana Weight Loss Surgeons and find out more information about bariatric surgery costs and Indiana Bariatric Centers. Click on the image at the top right of this page to learn about upcoming dates.

Off the wall things that occur after bariatric surgery

Monday, February 16, 2009 by Traci Baker
The staff at Clarian Bariatrics has a few members who are also Gastric Bypass or Gastric Banding patients.  We love to share stories with each other about how our physical being has changed in odd ways.  I would like to share some of these with you!
  • When you start losing weight on your backside your tailbone will become sore!  Be prepared to take a cushion/pillow with you when you are sitting for a long period of time.  This includes your car rides to and from work!
  • You may experience some sensations as your food moves through your new stomach and intestines.  Many of our female patients describe this as the butterfly feeling and some patients describe it as a baby kicking!  Don’t worry this is just a sign that your food is traveling down it’s newly given path!
Look for other thoughts in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have a question about causes of obesity, bariatric weight loss, weight loss doctors or Indianapolis Bariatric Centers, do not hesitate to ask!

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 by Andy Pollen
An interesting take on America's obesity epidemic from the perspective of our neighbors to the north. While it doesn't really break any new ground, it gives an interesting perspective of our American health care system and our perceptions of obese individuals.

The Bariatric Surgery Option

Thursday, December 18, 2008 by Terri Hohlt
How do you know if Indianapolis Gastric Bypass surgery is right for you?  There are many non-surgical treatments for people suffering from Obesity Related Problems and   only a physician from Indiana Bariatric Centers can properly determine the right course of action for you.

Bariatric surgery is often consider when a patient has a body mass index of 40 or more or if you have a BMI of 35 and other weight related health problems like diabetes or arthritis.  Gastric Bypass weight loss leads to lower blood pressure and other obviously beneficial outcomes.

Keep in mind that one may still be obese or overweight after Gastric Bypass Surgery as it takes several months - or years - to achieve a healthy weight depending on the individuals weight before surgery.

Because you will only be eating a few ounces of food at a time, expect some dramatic changes to your lifestyle that will contribute to a healthier you. Nutrition for patients of morbid obesity surgery will need to take vitamins and supplements and of course avoid high calorie sugary drinks.

Our Indiana bariatric doctors offer consultations and advice to those seeking help.   Attend one of our upcoming FREE informational seminars to learn more. Simply click on the image at the top right of this page. See you there!

I came across this article today and wanted to post it as soon as I could. This brings up a lot of interesting questions/concerns that are raised by patients and physicians at Indianapolis Bariatric Centers when discussing problems caused by obesity.

The article, from The Washington Post, just touches on some of the items up for debate when an individual undergoes weight loss surgery. I cannot stress enough that the decision to undergo weight loss surgery should not be taken lightly and should be discussed with your physician and family.

If you have questions about gastric bypass surgery or gastric bypass surgery costs, please consider joining us at a FREE informational seminar. Dates and times can be found by clicking on the image at the top right of this page.

Recipe: Blue Ribbon Chili

Monday, December 15, 2008 by Andy Pollen
A few weeks ago we had a chili cook-off at Clarian North Medical Center as part of our United Way Campaign. Lisa, from Clarian Bariatrics, made the recipe below and it was, by far, my favorite recipe of the day. I actually made this for a chili party and no one had any idea it was good for them! It is perfect for a chilly (pun intended) day like today!

BLUE RIBBON CLARIAN BARIATRICS CHILI

2 Lbs lean ground beef (rinsed and drained)
1 cup Textured vegetable protein
32 oz black beans (rinsed)
16 oz chicken broth
24 oz salsa of your choice (we like medium)
16 oz red beans
16 oz pinto beans
24 oz rotel medium chilies and tomatoes
2 tsp tabasco sauce
1 clove garlic minced
2 tsp chili pepper (add more to your taste )
¼ c six pepper blend
1 medium yellow onion

Brown beef, rinse and drain add half of chicken broth and TVP (textured veg protein ) to cook pot.  Allow to come to slight boil add onion, chili pepper and tabasco.  Add remaining ingredients slow cook on stove top for 1 ½ to 2 hours or transfer to slow cooker and simmer all day.  Serve garnished with low fat sour cream, low fat shredded cheese, green onions and tortilla chips or serve steaming alone for a warm enjoyable dinner.

Serving size 1 cup: 183 calories, 8 grams fat, 18 carbs
and 25 grams protein

Enjoy this recipe and do not hesitate to ask me if you have any questions about Indianapolis Bariatric Centers, Gastric Bypass Surgery Cost, Indiana Bariatric Centers, Bariatric Surgery Financing or our weight loss blogs or bloggers.

What's the difference?

Friday, December 12, 2008 by Andy Pollen
I recently had someone ask me which weight loss surgery procedure is performed most often at Clarian Bariatrics. After doing some checking with Terri, she told me that about 85 percent of our cases are roux-en-y (RNY) gastric bypass surgeries. The remaining 15 percent is made up of Lap Band surgeries.

But, what's the difference between these two types of bariatric surgery? Well, besides differences in how the surgery is performed, the Lap Band has only been growing in popularity over the last five years once the FDA offered approval of this type of morbid obesity surgery.

While Indianapolis Bariatric Centers will choose the best surgery for the patient, the majority of physicians at Bariatric Surgery Centers are RNY surgeons. Recovery time is about the same for both procedures, but the patient expectations for each will be slightly different.

If you have additional questions about gastric bypass weight loss, gastric bypass surgery cost or Lap Band procedures, please consider attending one of our FREE informational sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the month. You can click on the icon on the top right of this page for dates!

Ron's Story

Thursday, December 11, 2008 by Sara Donlan
We like to share patient stories whenever possible, and there are some stories that leave such a lasting impact we decide to use the individual's words in a television advertisement so that others can become educated on the serious health implications morbid obesity presents.

Ron's story was one that was shared via television and print advertisements to help raise awareness of health problems with obesity, Indianapolis Gastric Bypass and Indianapolis Bariatric Centers.

Feeling his life was not worth living, Ron sought help from one of Clarian Bariatric's Indiana Bariatric Doctors and he was able to reclaim his life. Below, Ron shares his story.

John will be the focus of our upcoming advertising campaign and I cannot wait to share his story with you, as I think it will resonate. In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have about Indianapolis bariatric centers, bariatric surgery centers or Indiana weight loss doctors.

Are you considering weight loss surgery?

Monday, December 8, 2008 by Sara Donlan
Before considering Weight Loss Surgery, you need to consult an Indiana weight loss doctor. One other thing you can do yourself is check your Body Mass Index or BMI. We have a great tool for BMI on the Clarian Health Web site. Try it out by clicking here.

Indiana Bariatric surgeons will calculate your BMI as well, but if you think you might be suffering health problems with obesity or obesity medical problems, this quick test will let you know where you stand.

Clarian's Indiana Bariatric Centers offer FREE monthly seminars where you can go and meet Indianapolis Bariatric Surgeons, support staff and fellow patients who have had or are considering weight loss surgery. You can check the schedule and find other information on the upper right of this page or by visiting ACallToChange.org.
