Did you know?
The benefits of bariatric surgery are numerous:
Longer Life – Studies show that gastric bypass surgery can improve your life expectancy by as much as 89%.
Reduced Health Problems – Severe obesity is associated with at least 50 diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, fatty liver, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, gout and various skeletal and joint problems. Bariatric surgery has been proven extremely successful in eliminating or dramatically reducing most of these health problems. For example, 80% of non-insulin dependent diabetics are cured as a result of gastric bypass. Sleep apnea patients enjoy uninterrupted sleep within a year of surgery, and half of the patients with high blood pressure come of their medications within a few months of surgery.
Psychological Benefits – Bariatric surgery can also help reduce the stress and anxiety associated with obesity. With a new self-image, issues like depression and fear of social situations can be overcome. A new desire and ability to interact with family and friends is also a common benefit following bariatric treatment.

From their very first visit at Clarian Bariatrics, all patients receive extensive education about the health problems with obesity, the presumed causes of the epidemic rise in obesity in Indiana and the U.S., the medical, psychological, social and economic consequences of obesity, and the keys to maintained successful weight loss.
These educational sessions are conducted by Indianapolis weight loss surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, psychologists and other experts. The sessions are also attended by former patients who provide a personal perspective of their experience and describe the challenges they faced after weight loss. Attendees are also provided with a tour of the facility and are given numerous references for further research.
From there, individuals can decide whether or not the time is right for Indianapolis area bariatric surgery and will schedule a consultation. In future posts, I will discuss what happens after the initial consultation. In the meantime, if you have questions, please call us toll free at 877-275-2555.
News article: Obese People Are At Greater Risk For Developing Alzheimer's
Obesity is on a rampage, with the World Health Organization pegging the numbers at more than 300 million worldwide, with a billion more overweight. With obesity comes the increased risk for cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, and hypertension.
Now comes more discouraging news. In the current online edition of the journal Human Brain Mapping, Paul Thompson, senior author and a UCLA professor of neurology, and lead author Cyrus A. Raji, a medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and colleagues compared the brains of people who were obese, overweight, and of normal weight, to see if they had differences in brain structure; that is, did their brains look equally healthy.

Staff qualifications when searching for a bariatric surgery clinic, Part II
What are the staff qualifications?
Because Clarian Bariatrics is a surgical weight loss program, this is not as big an issue as it would be in a weight loss clinic. You can be sure here that you are followed by qualified, board certified medical doctors and nurses who are well trained and have a great deal of experience in surgical weigh loss.
Who supervises the program?
Terri Hohlt, MSN, RN, is the Program Administrator. Terri has 30 years of nursing experience with Clarian Health. Her role is to keep an overview of the whole program. She hires the staff, keeps the program on budget, makes sure the physicians and staff have what they need provide top of the line care to our Indiana bariatric patients. Terri continually monitors all aspects of the program to assure we provide the quality care each person deserves.
The medical director of the program is Samer Mattar, MD, who is board certified surgeon. Dr. Mattar has received special training in advanced laparoscopy surgery at Emory University Hospital. He is also a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, and several other professional organizations. The medical director's role is to ensure that all patients receive the highest quality medical care available.
In addition to the above, the Clarian Bariatrics surgery program provides a “complete package” program with weight loss support provided by a full staff of highly trained, licensed, board certified Dietitians who specialize in weight loss and the health problems caused by obesity. We also have a Bariatrics Behavioral Medicine department headed up by Clinical Psychologist William Hilgendorf, PhD, HSPP. His staff helps to support your surgical weight loss effort with a variety of group sessions geared specifically to bariatric patients.
What type of weight-management training, experience, education, and certifications does the staff have?
You can see from the list above that this program is serious about providing you top of the line quality care. In addition to the above highly trained staff, other members of the team are patients of this bariatric surgery center with the deepest understanding of the program, and patients concerns, and struggles. They have insights that only someone who has been there can provide, that adds to their qualifications for the position they have at this Indianapolis Weight loss clinic.

Clarian Bariatrics Adds Surgeons and Moves Location to Meet Demand
Exciting changes are in store for Clarian Bariatrics this summer as the program announced the addition of two full-time surgeons and a move to a new 30,000 square foot outpatient clinic to better accommodate the rapidly growing program, which has experienced double digit growth the past three years.
Dr. Daniel T. McKenna will join the surgical team of Clarian Bariatrics, a designated Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), on August 10. Dr. McKenna joins the programs five other bariatric surgeons who completed nearly 400 surgeries at Clarian North Medical Center in 2008.
A Wisconsin native, McKenna comes to Clarian Bariatrics from Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where he completed his minimally invasive surgery fellowship. He is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and his Doctor of Medicine. McKenna was a categorical resident in general surgery at the University of Utah and the University of Wisconsin.
In April, Dr. Jack Ditslear joined the Clarian Bariatrics staff full-time after working on a part-time basis with the program since its launch in 2004. A Noblesville native, Dr. Ditslear graduated with honors in chemistry at Miami University of Ohio and then graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Dr. Ditslear carries a vast amount of experience in bariatric surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons, and is also accredited as a Bariatric Center of Excellence Surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation. Additionally, Dr. Ditslear is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is on the teaching staff for the Indiana University General Surgery Residence program.
“We are thrilled to have Drs. McKenna and Ditslear join the surgery staff at Clarian Bariatrics on a full-time basis,” Jonathan Goble, FACHE, President & CEO of Clarian North Medical Center, said. “The addition of these two skilled surgeons will aid in the successful implementation of many exciting programs.”
Among those initiatives is the launch of a non-surgical division for the weight loss program and an adolescent bariatric program. In addition, an exercise program championed by Erin Light, a certified personal trainer, will begin in August and provide patients an educational approach to personally-tailored exercise programs. Also, William Hilgendorf, PhD, Manager of Bariatric Behavioral Health, has implemented a behavioral program that will increase the coping skills of post-operative patients and improve patient outcomes.
These new patient support opportunities fit with the already established and popular weekly support groups and quarterly cooking classes. Programs like these have led Clarian Bariatrics to be nationally recognized as a robust program that enjoys some of the best weight loss outcomes in effectiveness and durability.
Due to the ongoing program growth, the Clarian Bariatrics outpatient clinic will move from its current location in building 11 of Intech Park to a 30,000 square foot space in building 10 of Intech Park, located on the northwest side of Indianapolis. This move will provide staff with more exam rooms, dedicated exercise rooms and additional meeting space for support groups and the non-surgical weight loss program.
“The growth our program has experienced over the past five years has been remarkable and humbling,” Samer Mattar, MD, FACS, Medical Director of Clarian Bariatrics, said. “Our staff, surgeons and patients have helped us create a unique program that is only beginning to reach its full potential.”
Guided Journey

As they climb the mountain, the guide leads them and coaches them. He keeps them motivated and catches them when they are tired or afraid. But although he can help them through the journey, the guide can’t climb the mountain for them. He can only lead them down the right path. It is up to the climbers to take each step for themselves.
I often equate my position at Clarian Bariatrics with the mountain guide’s position. I know many of my coworkers feel this way too. You can probably tell by this blog that we enjoy guiding you on this journey.
Our Indiana supervised weight loss classes prepare you mentally, provide you with health education, and supply you with the physical and mental equipment you need. Our pre-operative weight loss surgery class teaches you the conditions and course you are about to embark on, and our Support Groups keep you moving forward on the journey. But just like the mountain guide can’t hike the mountain for others, we can’t make the day-to-day decisions for you.
It is up to you to climb this mountain for yourself. As our program grows, we are discovering new ways that we can continue to help you on this path. Continue visiting this blog to learn about the new additions in the future. And as you are using your strength to take one step forward each day, we will be right by your side to help.
Happy Blog Birthday!

On July 12, our bariatric blog turned one-year-old, and I am amazed at how far we have come since those early days when blogging was still a new endevour that provided lots of apprehension and confusion. Now as the old saying goes, our Indianapolis weight loss surgery bloggers have taken to it like a duck to water!
While we have been happy with the way the blog has evovled, we want to hear what you think! Some come on Constant Readers (yes, a shameless Stephen King rip off, I know), what have you really enjoyed about our bariatric weight loss blog, and what would you like to see more of? Where have we succeeded? What could we do better?
Like everything we do at Clarian Bariatrics, this blog is for your benefit and we want to make sure we are keeping current on your needs and offering support when you need it most. So, send me an e-mail (apollen@clariannorth.com) or leave a comment below. We'd love to hear from you!
Step away from the cheeseburger!
STOP! Put that cheeseburger down and step away from the counter. I know there are healthier options at local fast food chains, but as a Indiana weight loss surgery patient I have paid the price for a trip to the Arches, a ride with the King or a swim with Long John. We need to stay away from those places. If you are tempted to try just one fry, who is to say you will not slip down that slope to a value meal (the fries are cheaper in that)?
If you must stop somewhere, go for a salad (no dressing), hold the cheese and croutons. Add lemon juice and salt and pepper and tons of veggies. The cheese is never 1% or 2% and you add tons of unnecessary calories to our day. I will run over to Subway and get a salad with grilled chicken and loads of veggies on these harried days. The kids love it and it is a better option than the burger joint.
Sometimes these places are a huge trigger for us and I admit I have tried. That doesn’t make me a failure. It does make me very cranky; the stomach cramps are not pleasant. Take it from one who has sailed with the arches, the king and Long John. Do not go there. Think ahead, keep your plans on a calendar so that you know the commitments for the day and can prepare ahead of time. Preparation is the key. If you have specific dietary questions feel free to call one of Clarian Bariatrics Registered Dieticians at 317-275-6067.
Considering Weight Loss Surgery? Read This First!
I will not discuss those in this blog, but I do want to talk about two things that should NOT be a factor in the consideration for bariatric surgery. From the July 2009, issue of Obesity Action Coalition:
Loose Skin: Loose skin is a reflection of significant weight loss and it does not seem to matter if the weight-loss is slow or fast. If a gastric band patient, a sleeve patient and a gastric bypass patient all lose 150 pounds, they will ALL have some degree of loose skin.
Cost: In most markets, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are more expensive than adjustable gastric banding. While this is not important if insurance is paying for your surgery, it is important to those that have to pay for their surgery themselves. “Cash pay”
Patients should choose their operation FIRST and THEN figure out how they are going to pay for it. The decision of which type of surgery to have needs to be discussed with your surgeon as the two of you should make that choice together.

News article: Races Differ in Rates of Sleep-Related Obesity
Regardless, there are some health issues related to obesity that do affect ethnic groups in different ways. The following article from Weight Loss Surgery magazine highlights one such issue related to sleep disorders.

People who get too little sleep are at risk for obesity, and for blacks the risk is greater than for whites, New York researchers have found. Studying the connection between short sleep duration and obesity, researchers analyzed national data from 29,818 adults aged 18 to 85. The study found that 52 percent of blacks and 38 percent of whites were obese (body-mass index of 30 or higher). Rates of short sleep duration (five hours or less per night) were 12 percent for blacks and 8 percent for whites.
The adjusted obesity/short sleep duration odds ratio was 1.78 for blacks and 1.43 for whites, which shows that blacks have a 35 percent greater risk of obesity associated with short sleep duration, the researchers said.
"Compared to white Americans, black Americans had a greater prevalence of short sleep and a greater prevalence of obesity. Both black and white Americans who were obese tended to have short sleep duration," study author Girardin Jean-Louis, an associate professor at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center at the Brooklyn Health Disparities Research Center, said in a news release.
The findings suggest that short sleep time may be a contributor to the obesity crisis in the United States, Jean-Louis said. Previous research has found that people who sleep for less than seven hours a night are at increased risk for obesity. The study was to be presented Monday at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting, in Chicago.

News article: Does health insurance affect weight loss?
I think more telling is how willing they are to make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. That is, how many support groups will they attend? Can they give up the unhealthy eating habits and focus on intake? Are they committed to a regular exercise routine? In my opinion, it doesn't matter if you have commercial insurance, a government funded plan or a self-pay option, if you have the will...there will be a way! Click here to read the quick article.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Time
It doesn’t matter what time of the day, the rules don’t apply anymore. Just because it is breakfast time are we are supposed to consume “breakfast” type foods? What exactly does that mean?

Since my Indianapolis weight loss surgery, I find that it doesn’t matter what time of day it is but what I am consuming! My breakfast of champions may be my leftovers from dinner the night before.
The main focus is of nutrients for patients who have undergone morbid obesity surgery is protein! If your meal is full of protein the rules of eating it at a specific time of day no longer apply. There is nothing wrong with eating breakfast type food at dinner time or dinner type food at breakfast time. Be creative with your foods and try new things!
What types of foods are you consuming? Have any protein packed recipes you’d like to share?
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me confidentially and directly at bariatric@clarian.org or 317-275-7010/877-275-2555.
Did you know?
Obese patients are about six times more likely to develop heart disease than those of normal weight. Increased levels of blood fats and the metabolic effects of obesity affect coronary disease.
An increased load on the heart leads to early development of congestive heart failure. Severely obese people are 40 times more likely to suffer sudden death, in many cases due to cardiac rhythm disturbances.
However, weight loss surgery can help elminate - or drastically improve - this health problem caused by obesity. If you would like to learn more then consider joining us at a FREE informational seminar.

News article: Obesity and hypertension
It estimated that excess body weight (including overweight and obesity), accounted for approximately 26 percent of cases of hypertension in men and 28 percent in women, and for approximately 23 percent of cases of coronary heart disease in men and 15 percent in women. Obese individuals have an increase in fatty tissue that increases their vascular resistance and in turn increases the work the heart has to do to pump blood throughout the body.
