I hope that everyone enjoyed reading the story about John Barnes that was recently added to the Indy Racing League's Web site (see below). I am re-posting the commericial that John did for Clarian Bariatrics earlier in the year as a refresher on just how far he has come.

Nerves, the good kind

Friday, March 6, 2009 by Andy Pollen
This week has been a big one. I wrapped up midterms earlier in the week (just two more months and I officially have my MBA!), we are moving our marketing offices today (gotta love new beginnings) and tomorrow I will run my first competitive 10K in more than five years.

I'm not good with change. I never have been, and probably never will be. With the three things I mentioned all happening in one week, I have been a ball of nerves since Sunday night, and I don't see it stopping until I cross the finish line tomorrow (hopefully at 8:46 a.m. exactly).

What I'm beginning to realize is that being nervous about something is not necessarily a bad thing. I used to hate the feeling of uncertainity and would worry myself sick about all the things that MIGHT happen. I would build myself up for the worst and expect the worst.

Do you ever feel that way? Is that how you feel about bariatric weight loss? That it's too nerve-racking to take the first step so you'll just maintain the status quo? Nothing in life worth doing is easy and weight loss surgery is no exception. Afterall, sometimes you just need to have faith that things will be fine.

So what I'm asking you to do is take a chance and get out of your comfort zone. If you've already had Indianapolis weight loss surgery then try something new this weekend - go for a hike in a new park (Tina offered some tips on great Indiana State Parks earlier in the week). If you are contemplating the weight loss journey, the join us at a FREE info session next week (click on the image at the top right of this page for more info).

There is no time like the present.

News article: Economic Status Affects Obesity Rates in Mexican-American and White Women

Friday, February 20, 2009 by Andy Pollen
Another interesting read from the Obesity Action Coalition. Don't forget to visit us at an upcoming info session if you have additional questions about bariatric surgery costs, causes of obesity, Indiana Hospitals, bariatric weight loss or weight loss surgery. We are here for you!

Happy Friday!

Obesity continues to increase for women in the United States, particularly among African-American and Mexican-American women. Between the ages of 35-44, there are approximately 3.3 million white women, 1.4 million African-American women, and 575,000 Mexican-American women who are obese

A new study published in the journal Public Health Nursing reveals that there is an increased risk for midlife obesity among Mexican-American and White women who were poor as children and adults. However, this did not hold true for African-American women.

News article: Obesity - America's epidemic

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 by Andy Pollen
An interesting take on America's obesity epidemic from the perspective of our neighbors to the north. While it doesn't really break any new ground, it gives an interesting perspective of our American health care system and our perceptions of obese individuals.

News article: Obesity caught like a common cold?

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 by Andy Pollen
A similar article to this made the rounds a few months ago, but it is worth bringing it to attention again. There is definitely more research that needs to beIndiana Bariatric Surgeons, Indiana Weight Loss, Indianapolis Bariatric Physicians, Indianapolis Bariatrics, Lap Band, Indianapolis Gastric Bypass conducted on this subject, but it is interesting none the less. Personally, I think this AD-36 virus could be a contributing factor to obesity, but should not be singled out as "the" cause.

If you are interested in learning more, simply click on this link to read full text from the LiveScience.com article.

Do you have an additional question about causes of obesity, bariatric weight loss, Indiana Hospitals or problems caused by obesity? Then leave a comment below and one of our medical professionals at Clarian Bariatrics would be more than happy to help!

Where do I begin? Part III

Monday, February 2, 2009 by Lisa Buckalew
The first thing you will probably notice after weight loss surgery is that a radiant smile will come across your face.  It not only lights up your face, but all of the faces around you.  This tool, when wielded correctly, which Indiana Bariatric Surgeons give you will empower you to change everyone around you.

You will want to share your happiness, your successes and share the journey.  Support groups are a wonderful venue for that.  You can learn from the struggles, successes and paths of those who have gone before you and offer a ray of hope for those who will go after.  Remember this is the journey you have chosen take one step at a time, baby steps if needed.

Instead of thinking of the past as a failure, think of it as a platform, a foundation of learning, to build a house you must learn how to hammer a nail.  The same goes for weight loss surgery patients, one bite at a time, one step, one choice.

One of my favorite quotes by Steve Grant, former linebacker of our beloved Colts and minister for Sports World Ministries, said “You are not born a winner, you are not born a loser, you are born a chooser!”  Chose to make it a wonderful journey, and use the resources at Clarian Bariatrics to help pave the path.

News article: Dueling Docs

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 by Andy Pollen

The following piece hit my Google alert today and I found it a pretty interesting read from The Huffington Post. In this popular series from the Web site, they take two physicians and have them debate a hot-button issue. In this case, stomach stapling surgery and weight loss surgery in general.

After working with Clarian Bariatrics for the past two years, I side with the camp that bariatric weight loss is the only way morbidly obese individuals can overcome  a circle of health problems and reclaim their lives.

However, like anything in life, the decision to undergo weight loss surgery should not be made alone and without careful consideration. Talk to your physician, family and friends and read as much as you can about the pros and cons of this life-saving surgery before making a decision.

How I solved my biggest health problem caused by obesity

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 by Tina Carmichael

I had heartburn, bad heartburn.  I was taking Prilosec twice a day, and  insurance did not cover the mediciation.  It was costing me at least $50 a month. I knew it was an obesity related problem because it only started when my weight was more than 200 pounds.

I tried various diets without a long-term weight loss.  My primary care physician put me on prescription medication for weight loss, and again, I had limited results of about 12 pounds then no more.  How frustrating to only loose only 12 pounds then no more after weeks and weeks on a diet.

I admit that exercise is not a big thing for me. I have hobbies that keep me sitting down and motionless that I enjoy more that moving, especially when movement is harder from being so heavy!  Over and above being what I call “lazy” – I had stress at my job (who doesn’t) but I believe it contributed to my inability to loose.  Therefore, I changed jobs (not to lose weight)  praying I had found one with less stress.  I came to work at Clarian Bariatrics  and consider it the best move I have made in a long time.

This is just a tease of the rest of my story. Check back later in the week for part two and feel free to e-mail me with your questions relating to bariatric surgery, causes of obesity, Indiana Hosptials and Indianapolis weight loss.

News article: Leaders Worldwide Considering Taxing Obesity-Causing Foods

Tuesday, January 13, 2009 by Terri Hohlt

Isn’t it sad that we have to think of taxing food to get people to change their behaviors!  I am so proud to be working with a program that promotes healthy living and lifestyle changes.  Many of us know what we need to do to make healthier choices but we sometimes need someone else to hold us accountable or get us motivated to make the changes.  Clarian Bariatrics team is ready and willing to help you or your loved one start that journey to reach your weight loss goals in a positive rewarding manner.  Give us a try!

Business Week reports on the increasing drive among legislators to tax unhealthy food items, noting that “New York Governor David Paterson is the most serious of all, proposing in his 2009 state budget that an 18% sales tax be levied on non-diet soda and sugary juice drinks.  Such a tax, he says, would raise $404 million in the fiscal year starting in April, and $539 million in the year after that -- all to be earmarked for obesity-fighting public health programs.”

Businessweek paints the measure as radical, but adds that the “concept of a so-called obesity tax is slowly gaining support, floated by such disparate public figures as British Conservative Party leader David Cameron, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, French tax authorities, and politicians in regions of Canada, Australia, and Ireland.”

Clarian Bariatrics reaches "across the pond"

Friday, January 9, 2009 by Andy Pollen

The Internet really does make the world smaller. Recently, we were contacted via our general mailbox at Clarian Bariatrics by an individual from FastFoodNation, a public health Web site in the United Kingdom that aims to educate the public on the dangers of eating too much fast food.

The site features practical information and tips in an easy to read format that is relatable whether you are in the U.S. or the U.K. Sue, the individual who sent the e-mail, was very complimentary of our Web site and we thought we would return the favor by directing you to their site.

Hey, it may even get you motivated to take a trip overseas!

In the meantime, if you have any questions about bariatric surgery costs, causes of obesity, Indiana Hospitals, bariatric weight loss or weight loss surgery, please do not hesitate to ask.

Solutions to Maladaptive Eating, Part II

Monday, January 5, 2009 by Alvin Furiya
Happy New Year! I just wanted to follow-up with the second part of my "Solutions for Maladaptive Eating" post from last week. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about bariatric weight loss or after weight loss surgery maintenance.

Solutions:
How to prevent maladaptive eating?
  • Have a routine!
  • “Don’t buy it” and “Don’t bring it in the house.”
  • Healthy eating is for the entire family– variety or foods from all food groups(long term) and potion control, avoiding deep fried foods, eliminating or changing the type of foods you eat.
  • Don’t eat fast – best way to prevent over stuffing the pouch.
  • Chew!

The lap band is a tool. It will help adapt to new methods of eating but you must make changes and practice these skills at every meal:
  1. Create a routine
  2. Slow down and chew.
  3. Portion control – limit to 1 to 1 ½ cups per meal
  4. Always have a food source with fiber at every meal. e.g. vegetables at lunch and dinner and fruit at breakfast.
  5. Understanding that a little hunger is okay. If you are “starving,” ask yourself if you are following all of the rules?! Develop a new relationship with food.

Follow all of rules no matter how inconvenient. Practicing positive behaviors and changing the old behaviors is the only way to have success with weight loss surgery regardless at which Indiana hospitals the procedure performed.
