I ran across a recent New York Times article about our new president and his family tending a garden patch on the South Lawn of the White House. Apparently there hasn’t been a garden at the White House since World War II. The garden will include vegetables, berries, and herbs, but no 
beets since the president doesn’t like them.
Mrs. Obama states that the garden will provide food for the first family’s meals and for formal dinners, but its most important role will be to “educate children about healthful, locally grown fruit and vegetables at a time when obesity and diabetes have become a national concern."
